When it comes to all of our hunts for Whitetail and Aoudad they are for the most part very similar. Both hunts are spot and stalk hunts. Layered based clothing is ideal here. During our whitetail season the saying around West Texas is "If you don't like the weather just wait 15 minutes and it will change. We have had whitetails hunts in mid November to Late December with weather varying from 85 to 15 degrees. What we tell most everyone is to somewhat plan for anything. If we were hunting remotely and in spike camps it would be one thing. However with us having our lodge that we will be launching in and out of everyday in my opinion you can't have to much stuff. Again a good layer based camo is best. We do lots and lots of glassing so good pair of 10x42 binoculars or better is a must. All of our guides carry spotting scopes as well so it isn't a necessity unless you just want to bring one. A good comfortable pair of hunting boots with good ankle support is a must. We have some hunts where you may not end up doing a ton of walking and then there are others where we are on foot all the time. Insulated and waterproof boots aren't necessary, but definitely wouldn't hurt. Other items needed include gloves, hunting backpack, beanie, and a hat.
Lets Talk Gun Calibers
For Whitetail I prefer my hunters using a 243 or larger, with good solid bullets. No ballistic tips, since we are a spot and stalk outfit some of the closer shots could be in some thicker brush and you want a bullet that is going to pack a punch and hold together. I always tell everyone when they ask " What gun should I bring?" if they all fall in that caliber category bring whatever you shoot best and are most comfortable with.
For our Aoudad hunts I recommend no smaller than a 270 caliber gun and again with good solid bullets. NO BALLISTIC TIPS! Aoudad are some very, very tough animals with a much different vital system then what you are typically used to on a whitetail or any other North American game animal. You are usually taught to shoot everything behind the shoulder with these you do not. They are a barbary sheep from Northern Africa. All of their vitals are much lower and quite a bit more forward than most North American species. For the absolute best shot placement on them you want to come up just a little over 1/3 of the way up from the very bottom of shoulder and punch through them. This is also why shooting a much more solid bullet is key.
One last thing to know
For anyone wanting to come on a hunt with us you need to get very comfortable with making shots from 100-350 yds off of shooting sticks. If you notice I didn't mention them in the gear list. That is because all of our guides are equipped with the best sticks in our opinion in the business. If you have some you just absolutely love please feel free to bring them. There is a chance you may get to lay down on a bipod in a rare situation, but for the most part you will be making most all the shots off of standing shooting sticks.
